There are laws of restriction on how old someone must be to contribute to certain types of work. Not where I am from, of course.

I expect it's something to do with family. Birthdays are celebrated as a special event when it isn't. People seem to take a personal affront that they don't have a day to pin a person to in order to shower them with gifts. Or forget and need to beg some wasteful forgiveness.

That's usually true for Shinra, as well. [ though there's been some talk of lowering the enlistment age, he's heard. ]

You're not used to having personal effects, are you? Gifts are supposed to come with use or sentimental value. We keep them because they hold a good or bad association with them. But we can't miss what we never had, I suppose.

It is. But no more difficult than anywhere else considered slums.

Yes. I was very expensive to develop, and equally expensive to maintain.

I have weapons, armor, and other gear. It's not the same as a gift, though. I received one of those here, and it's very important to me.

So you perhaps have a little understanding of why people want to give gifts so that they can foster that importance in you.

he also doesn't understand the utility of choosing one's own birthday, but he's learned a surprising amount about birthdays generally since his arrival here, so maybe that will come with time, too. ]

I doubt that you do. Isolation from those your own age denies you the ability to learn essential social skills.
