A WARM WELCOME

The journey here has not been a particularly convenient one. The last thing you can recall is the room of blinding white and the incomprehensible voices that were speaking about you. Then came the dropping of the floor beneath you and suddenly you were falling into black. As you come to and regain a more clear vision of the world about you, you find that you are surrounded by pleasant greenery.

Deciduous trees are sprinkled here and there in some miscellaneous fashion. There are plants and flowers all about, the chirping of birds. Above you rests a fairly clear sky with a dotting or two of clouds. The sun is pleasant. Overall, it’s comfortable. Perhaps too comfortable.

MEADOWLANDS ARRIVAL

Within eyesight, though you can’t possibly know the footing distance, there appear to be fields. A portion of them dedicated to long stalk vegetables and the rest a neatly organised collection of leafy greens. Upon closer inspection, you’ll find that some of these look ready to be picked right away. Not much further past the fields are other buildings. Simple in style and not at all grand in structure or make. There’s people, too. It looks lively. The locals will tell you that you’ve set foot in Aldrip.

Not far from you, in fact relatively close if not in hand already, is a rolled parchment bound by a rather nondescript twine. If you unfurl it, you’ll find a generic welcoming message addressed specifically to you.

Welcome to Expiation. We, who have found you so worthy and deserving, have declared you to be one of the Chosen.

The cryptic written greeting is followed by a collection of recorded statistics—physical and mental attributes, along with other observations about your person that clearly weren’t made by you (but may not necessarily be inaccurate).

Nearing the bottom is a peculiar line—

You have been charged with ▬▬ and in accordance with the doctrine of this world, you have ▬▬ until you will face your sentencing. Prepare your defence adequately or face the repercussions.

In spite of that strange little addition at the bottom, which may or may not make sense to you, you’re not the only one arriving in the meadowlands. You have some options. Maybe check with a nearby fellow otherworlder, scour the fields, meet the locals. First impressions, after all, can sometimes last a lifetime.

WILD COMPANIONS

The collective of newly-arrived aren’t the only ones exploring the meadowlands. Curious about the various sounds created by those not native to the world, there are animals living in and near the surrounding areas drawn to the attention. Different types and sizes of birds and beasts or other creatures that may resemble ones from your home world begin to close in on your location. Do they mean to do you harm or are they only simply wary about who you might be and what you’re doing?

Some of them are incredibly friendly, especially if you’re inclined to provide them with food, or if they’re younger and they simply don’t know better. But be aware, for every young animal, there is likely to be a parent not far behind, and less inclined to be understanding of your strange fate in this new predicament. As such, no matter how cute something may be, reconsider taking it with you, else you may simply stir the ire of their families.

If you find yourself in a position where you’ve inadvertently stepped into a territory not meant for you, you’ll need to find either a strategic escape or resort to force and self-defence. Fortunately, some of these larger, more aggressive beasts, are much the same ones that the locals in Aldrip have been seeking to cull for the safety of the citizens. Maybe you can make some fast friends with the Expiation natives by bringing them something you’ve had to put down.

THOSE WHO WERE THERE

Those Who Were There are what the locals refer to their gods as, considering them responsible for their continued growth in the world, the abundance of their crops and sea life, the greenery that surrounds them, native wildlife, and some of the strangely advanced luxury items that make their livelihoods a touch more convenient.

You’ve arrived at an opportune time. Although the peoples of the continent freely show their appreciation for their higher beings, every once in a while, they celebrate by way of joyful festivals, grand songs, and more expressive means of their devotion.

FESTIVITIES

Aldrip seems to be a bit busier than usual, with a little more foot traffic than what may be considered a normal day in the life. There’s music in the air provided by lutes, panpipes, and the dulcet tones of men and women alike, expressing songs and tall tales of those they have come to revere as celestial beings. They believe that honouring their betters can be done with song and dance as much as it can be with offerings and prayer.

The town is bustling, a plethora of additional street stalls selling all kinds of local cuisine, jewellery, weapons, and accessories branded with insignias that represent the same wave motif as can be found on the charms every newly-arrived will receive. There’s raucous laughter, a plethora of drinks (alcoholic and non) that are passed along merrily to those wandering through if one doesn’t have a drink already. It’s the perfect way to integrate yourself with the people whilst taking in the celebration.

A portion of the town has had the land cleared, set up with a minimalistic coliseum ring for archery competition and one-on-one combat. Winners of these exchanges don’t get anything grand, but are presented with plenty of free food and drink, and some may even be awarded with some modest badge accessories from the local shops for providing the people with some sport.

Out by the fields, closer to the shoreline of the Talion Sea, there’s a grand pillar of fire that’ll burn all through the day and into the dark of the night where more music follows and accompanies spirited dancing.

SENTIMENTAL OFFERINGS

If you’re searching for a momentary reprieve from the bustle of the festival, there’s a modest walkway of cobblestone that will lead you from the main streets of stalls, drinks, and making merry. Following the way it winds and curves will eventually take you to an elaborate display of dried flowers, jewellery, fanciful cloths, and other items. Some of these hang from nearby trees. Some are draped over an altar fashioned of dark wood.

A local who spies you there kindly explains that it’s a place to leave items of offering for Those Who Were There, as gratitude for all they have granted their loyal people. They also explain that the more sentimental attachment you hold for the item you give up, the more pleased the gods will be with you. What does that mean, exactly? It’s difficult to say, but it seems that it might endear you to the locals at the very least.

Those who leave an item will receive a noticeable wave-like mark on the interior of their dominant hand wrist, almost as if it’s a brand of some kind. This is temporary mark and will only last the length of the festival, but if locals see it, they will be more inclined to give information on the land, the people, and perhaps even extra drinks, food, or shop wares.

Even if you don’t leave an item, as you’ve only just arrived and you may not have much on your person, the locals won’t punish you or think ill of you. It’ll give you a chance to gather yourself before you go back to the festival proper. If you choose to go back at all. The relative quiet is so welcoming, after all.

THE GLITCH EFFECT

NO SIGNAL

If you’ve arrived in this world with a mobile device or something akin to (notebook, laptop, and so on), you’ll find that whilst there are no electrical outlets, there are slender and flat platforms available to keep items of this nature with a charge. You cannot connect to a network and there’s no signal for a connection to grapple onto. That said, programmes that don’t require a connection to be of use (note taking applications, calculators, games), are still operable.

You may find, however, in the use of these programmes that perhaps images are not displaying properly. The colouration may be inverted. There may be unexplainable lines drawn across graphics. Text may not accurately be presented, instead a jumble and tangle of letters, forming what looks more like a mass of verbal tendrils across your screen.

Bizarre and strange sounds may emerge from your device, sometimes a low hum that may be indiscernible to others. Sometimes a high frequency that lingers in the air. It may be just a flash of sound. It may be several seconds long.

Furthermore, it is possible that you may find strange imagery imprinted on the screen temporarily, even where there should be no graphic at all. It’s there for a moment or two before it fades away, almost as if it’s subliminal messaging. The strange imagery is difficult to make out—a highly detailed eye, or perhaps what appears to be an angular face. No two images will be the same, though some may hold some eerily similar depictions.

This strange happenstance will occur periodically until the festival reaches its conclusion.

STATIC BUZZING

Don’t think if you didn’t arrive with a mobile device or related that you’re free from some of the strange electronic phenomena. Devices that are native to Expiation will experience similar errors. The difference is that the devices as a collective (personal computers, printers, cameras, the platforms for charging devices, and more) will emit a fluctuating and repeating frequency of sound cycling from high to low. Some will be able to hear it, some will not, but for those who do, it will come accompanied with a static buzzing sound, as if a connection somewhere is on its last proverbial legs.

There isn’t a means to stop the sound from emerging without depowering the device in question and even the locals don’t seem to know what to do. There are several devices strewn about Aldrip, however, so even if you should unplug one, there will be others expressing the same assault on the ears. Aldrip’s people don’t seem particularly alarmed, however, explaining to those who ask that this sort of thing simply happens every so often, and should they but have faith, Those Who Were There will handle all things ‘in good time.’

Unlike the personal devices brought in by newly-arrived, the electronic devices of Expiation will not display incorrect / jumbled graphics, text, or bizarre flashing images, which may be considered a blessing in disguise, despite having to experience the potentially annoying hum. This strange occurrence, too, will mysteriously end once the festivities have drawn to a close.

Rin | Original Character

[personal profile] maiestas 2023-01-23 09:28 am (UTC)(link)
I. A Warm Welcome

[That was a rude awakening of sorts. It's not like she's not familiar with being thrown around one bit. She manages to stick her landing this time around. Heels digging into the pile of dirt that she lands in, gracefully, until she manages to somehow fall backward into the leafy greens adjacent to her when she attempts to move.

It takes her a moment to gather her surroundings. Silently noting the katana that came with her and her wedding ring that was still intact on her finger at the very least. There was also this paper that was seemingly stuck to her hand. Unfortunately, it seems that her husband was nowhere in sight after being sucked into the abyss. However, she knew full well he could take care of himself, and the most important part was figuring out where she even was.

From afar, she could see buildings, and people. A welcomed sight after seeing her homeland in a state of constant fear and war.

That town would be the first place she goes, and she moves onward. Eventually making it to the city and immediately gathering information on this newfound town and world. Quickly coming to terms that she certainly wasn't home anymore after speaking to the locals, and finally reading the parchment paper that had come with her. For the most part, ignoring the strange fact that everything about her was listed right there, but that wasn't the problem.

The problem?]

Treason?! I might commit a murder here and there but those people deserve it. Hells -- Might even steal sometimes, but treason? Nonsense!

[Yes, say that loud enough for everyone to hear, Rin.]

II. Those who were there

a. festival.
[It wasn't her intention to interact with the locals or their festivities. She was looking for someone, hoping that he was brought here as well, but her luck wasn't always the best. With a solemn sigh, she takes a seat at one of the local stalls where they're serving alcohol. Rarely ever indulging in a drink, she finds herself needing one after that realization. First, downing a pint of alcohol, before she orders another drink to go.

As long as she was here, she would have to adapt until this so called sentencing. With that being said, she doesn't hesitate to clean out one of the nearby stalls of it's food, ever the hungry one when it came down to it. Certainly standing out with her unending appetite.]

Could you please keep filling up my plate? Your food tastes delicious, so keep it coming.

[It was obvious that she was trying to keep her mind off of something, and that solemn look on her face is hard to miss.]

iii. wildcard

Festival

[personal profile] inemeraldfaith 2023-01-23 08:14 pm (UTC)(link)
[Aerith is either handling all of this far better than she should be, or she's just really good at playing a part. If taking her past into consideration, it is very likely the latter. Regardless, despite the situation at hand, she's settling in well.

Potentially better than Rin. As if she's given next to no thoughts about whatever was in that rolled paper of statistics on her. The food and drink helps with that. Better than what she's used to having back home. Watching Rin demolish her food is almost fascinating.

She probably shouldn't address it and someone in some world out there like would take it as a faux pas, but...]

Wow, you must have been really hungry. That's impressive.
maiestas: (Default)

[personal profile] maiestas 2023-01-25 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
[Rin had been occupied with her food until she can feel a presence sitting down beside her. Her eyes moving from one of the skewers, and over to Aerith, who's greeted with a gentle smile. Sheepishly laughing under her breath at that comment, before her eyes gaze over to the many skewers that were left in the massacre of her eating.]

Hungry and sad, really. A very bad combo.

[Still, the owner seems pleased that she seems to enjoy the food so much. Though it doesn't seem fair that she's hogging the entirety of the stall to herself, so she shifts enough to give Aerith room to sit at the bar with her. Ever curious about the people that were brought here along with her. They all had something in common, which was that bullshit paper.]

Did you get some stupid paper, too?
inemeraldfaith: (pic#14586000)

[personal profile] inemeraldfaith 2023-01-25 05:43 am (UTC)(link)
[Hungry and sad. It's not a great couple of things to be, but she can understand very much why anyone would feel that way. It's not exactly ideal for any of them. Aerith nods in a way that seems to be a wordless understanding.

Despite the circumstances, however, she offers the owner the same polite smile and a little wave before she makes herself a little more comfortable.]

Thanks for the food!

[She isn't sure they can or should be trusting the people in this town, but until she sees otherwise, there's not much harm in trying to make good with others. Instead, she seeks a skewer for herself and begins to carefully pick it apart before addressing Rin.]

Yup, yup. [Aerith replies somewhat nonchalantly.] Although I don't really know what it's supposed to mean. Maybe it's not supposed to mean anything. I'm trying not to think about it too much.
maiestas: (Default)

[personal profile] maiestas 2023-01-25 06:23 am (UTC)(link)
[From the corner of her eye, she can't help but watch Aerith silently. If only because her world has made her become wary of people. It's a habit that she can't quite push to the side, but she figures that Aerith seems to have good intentions. She couldn't be paranoid about everyone now that she was here. So for now, she'll just enjoy this festival and relax as much as she can.]

Smart girl. I may have to do the same if I'm going to be living here for god knows how long.

[She doesn't quite know, or understand the consequences of not having a proper defense, but eh... She'll figure it out when she gets there. Maybe. For now, she waves down the host to get Aerith something to drink. Although, she isn't sure if she wants alcohol, or something different.]

Have a drink? We can cheers to bullshit.
inemeraldfaith: (pic#14586014)

[personal profile] inemeraldfaith 2023-01-25 06:49 am (UTC)(link)
[She can't exactly say how long any of them will be there. Someone else had made mention to her that all of this could just be a dream and if that's true, then wouldn't it mean it could easily be very temporary? But that's not very likely either. How many people have the same dream? How many people share the same dream, even?

Aerith is convinced this is probably neither a dream nor death. Which does lead one to wonder how long they'll be here for. How they got here. How they'll go back. If such a thing is even possible. It's a lot of unanswered questions and a frustrating lack of information to go on so far.

If only the locals would be more helpful.]

I think I could get behind that. They've been pretty open to sharing stuff with us.

[When the host comes by with a glass of... something rather, Aerith takes it with a grateful look before dipping her nose in for a sniff. Doesn't smell... super strong? Maybe not the most fancy thing, but not terrible either. Doesn't mean she's going to drink with reckless abandon.]

Thanks! You learn anything useful yet? I haven't. They're nice, but kind of caught in their celebrating.

You may not want to say such things quite so loudly.

[The man who responds to her is mid-wince as he does so, having previously been examining the wares on display at a nearby stall before her declaration had demanded his attention. Of course, he spies the parchment in her hand and immediately puts the pieces together— he'd been rather displeased with what had been written on his own, as well.]

Despite the severity of that particular crime, you'd be surprised how many people are willing to toss such accusations about. As for the rest, I'd take care not to draw too much undue attention.

[It's not like he's against stealing, and he's killed his share, but this is unfamiliar territory to them both, or so he's assuming— she seems as out-of-sorts as he had felt.]

Was there a bit about sentencing, as well?
maiestas: (Default)

[personal profile] maiestas 2023-01-25 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
[Usually she would be a bit more careful, but she didn't think anyone would be around to listen to her complaints. It seems that there was someone there, though, and she turns her head toward Balthier with a visible wince. The woman scratching the back of her head almost sheepishly upon realizing this mistake.

However, that wasn't the only thing that caught her attention. Those mannerisms, his speech... Well, it was familiar alright, but not the same face. Instead, she just gives him a friendly smile in turn. The paper in her hand crumpling into a massive ball that she simply places in her pocket for the time being. If only because staring at it and lamenting upon it would give her a further headache.]

Hmph, you sound awfully similar to my husband. But I suppose your right; I should probably keep my mouth shut for the time being.

[She has to wonder what his paper says. She'll pry into his affairs much later]

There was, but not enough information. It also said to prepare my defense accordingly, but that's near impossible because I didn't commit any forms of treason. ... Maybe.

[She takes a step forward, and the woman practically towers over him in height as she leans forward to better face him.]

What about you? False accusations on your end?

[He arches a brow as she steps closer, folding his arms across his chest. Fortunately for him, he’s used to having to look up— traveling with Fran for as long as he has made that a necessity.]

There may be some truth to them- however twisted it may be.

[He shrugs fluidly; he’s had so many accusations thrown at him over the years that it matters little to him if they’re true or false— usually. They’ve yet to build a prison that can hold him for long.]

Preparing a defense is quite a trick if one doesn’t know the details of the charges. ‘Treason’ is as broad as it is severe. It means something different wherever you go, beyond the whole betrayal bit.

[It doesn't hit her quite strongly yet, but the more this man speaks, the more she starts to feel homesick. Her face twists in sadness, but it's a momentary thing as she realizes she's talking to a complete stranger. Always careful to never show too much emotion; her expression quick to twist into an unnerving smile that feels a bit off.]

I probably shouldn't think too hard on it, but... Someone is really out here slapping us with charges that may, or may not be true. I have to admit, I'm not a huge fan!

[She crosses her arms, and leans against a nearby tree. Silently taking his words into consideration, she has to wonder if it's one of those supporters back home. She wouldn't be too surprised if they made it here, but she doesn't say anything. Instead, she simply sighs and tries to ignore that paper.]

Well, I'll figure it out. I always do, for the most part.

[A pause.]

I hope you have an adequate defense for your charge. Wouldn't want to see you hanging from a tree, you know?
theleadingman: (62)

[personal profile] theleadingman 2023-01-27 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, it would be a waste of a perfectly good neck, wouldn't it.

[The quip is near immediate; he smiles wryly, shaking his head.]

Whatever is at play here, they've not put us behind bars, at least none that we can see. That's something. I've not been hanged yet despite countless attempts, and I'm not about to start here. From your reaction to all of this, I'd say you're no stranger to trouble, either?

[Just to hazard a guess— not to mention she seems to think herself resourceful, which is an excellent quality to possess, should it prove to be true.]

[ The outrage is very obvious, but mostly because Wen Kexing himself had felt the same way. He had done many things that the world around him hated, many things that he personally felt guilt over, but the parchment's declaration about "charges" and "sentencing"? That was like some stupid joke. He immediately gravitates to the other person in town who is apparently having the same problem he is, hurrying over with long sleeves flapping like the wings of some angry bird. ]

Ah, right?! What do they know about anything! I want to find whoever wrote these and see if breaking their wrists is so funny.

[ Because it's clearly meant to be a jab at them. That's the only explanation. He needs someone to complain with. ]

[Now that the initial shock is over, she turns around to see some of the towns people staring at her. Not only that, but now there seems to be a very angry looking bird coming her way. Rin blinking a few times before she realizes it's a person, and not some bird. Still, he looks particularly angry, and she welcomes the fact that someone thinks that this is bullshit.]

As much as I'd like to agree, I think that would only put a bigger sentencing on our heads... But that doesn't mean we can't fume in secret.

[She crumples up the paper that's in her hand, and shoves it into her pocket for the time being. As much as she hates the fact that she's been dragged here, and given some weird paper, she tries her best to chin up now that there's someone to share her misery with.]

What'd your paper say? Any truth to it?
yeshou: (45)

[personal profile] yeshou 2023-01-29 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
Bigger sentencing?

[He frowns at that, clearly trying to work out the logic of it but somehow falling short.]

Who gave them the authority to give any sentencing in the first place?! If they already know who I am, they should be thankful I didn't break all their bones!

[Because if there's one thing Wen Kexing can do, it's apparently throw a temper tantrum. Not that any of his threats were able to destroy the single piece of offending parchment. When Rin asks about his paper, he scoffs, quieting more to sulk rather than out of decency.]

It had some stupid statement about failing my people. They're treating us like a joke. Whoever is behind this just has a death wish.
maiestas: (Default)

[personal profile] maiestas 2023-01-30 04:00 am (UTC)(link)
Have to say the same... If they were smart, they would have gotten me for being a rebel against a bunch of tyrants.

[Still, it's done, and there isn't anything she can possibly do about it but make her case. It would be hard, but... Maybe she'll be lucky and they'll offer some grace. Probably not, of course, but that's just wishful thinking on her end.

She does, however, take into consideration what he says. Rin raising one of her eyebrows, but only for a moment before it drops. 'Failing his people' huh? He might be some sort of leader, and she's rather curious about his background now. Usually one to pry into people's affairs, but he's already sulking as is, and she doesn't want to make it any worse.]

I agree. I can't say I'm particularly fond of slander. Whatever the case, though, seems like we're stuck here for now. Why don't we stick together and find out what we can.
yeshou: (12)

[personal profile] yeshou 2023-02-03 08:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Tch, it's because they're also dirty authority!

[Wen Kexing doesn't like authority on his best days. The idea that someone, god or mortal, was issuing decrees and then failing to even show their face was only convincing him it must be some kind of corrupt scheme.]

They're probably too ashamed to face you. If they accuse you of that, you'll be able to prove them guilty. I bet they're afraid of being executed too. Probably trying to hide their crimes by bossing us around.

[At least now that he's had his tantrum he's calmer. Compared to Rin, Wen Kexing is certainly still an embarrassment--all reaction with very little thought to temper it. It's a good thing she suggests a more level-headed, logical option to their whole situation. Otherwise, he'd probably just get himself in trouble.]

Ah... okay. Stick together. That's a good idea.

[Maybe he shouldn't have been tearing around solo this entire time.]

I'm Wen Kexing.

[ Kim finds himself lacking in appetite after coming here, which he thought was reasonable until he discovered how many people in his boat fell upon the food provided with a voracious sense of hunger. None, however, have been quite as impressive as this woman, seemingly intent upon eating this stall out of house and home. Kim himself (never an adventurous eater in the first place) is leaning against the stall, eating the singular bun he had ordered by meticulously tearing pieces off and thoughtfully chewing them as he gazes at the world around them, not even bothering sitting down.

When the woman puts down her plate only to ask for it to be refilled, he can't help but glance incredulously at her. ]

You're new here as well, aren't you? Did they really give us enough coin for all of that?

[ Kim knows what being poor feels like. There are some that would consider him to be poor even as a Lieutenant of the RCM, but he considers himself quite well-off in the grand scheme of things. But he has no thirst to experience being poor again and thus is saving as much money as he can. ]

Don't know. It's a festival, so I figured they're giving out free food. I'm sure I'll pay for it later if I have to.

[For now, she just wants to enjoy the food. There was so much famine and war back at home, that she rarely ever got to enjoy festivals, let alone food like this. It was a nice change, even though she felt a bit homesick due to being away from her husband. Still, she tries not to think on it much. Especially when there's a new stranger beside her, who she finally turns to look at with a friendly smile at least.]

If they're offering, then I'm willing to eat. But I take it you're not very hungry on your end, are you?

[With that bun and all. She does make room for him, in case Kim wants to sit at the bar beside her. Another plate of food being placed on front of her, that's filled to the brim just like she asked. About to dig in, before she turns her attention back to Kim again. A curious hum leaving her, before she completely shifts to the side to give him room to sit.]

I'll be more than happy to share my food, if you want. You're pretty skinny to the bone, old man. Come and have a drink, or something.

A Warm Welcome

You say it as though treason cannot be justified. Is that something that you believe?

[Linhardt's own parchment accuses him of high treason, and that's the accusation he's the most comfortable with. He'd gone into that decision with his eyes wide open. He can at least pretend that he doesn't question that decision: doesn't lie awake wondering if reacting to someone starting a war by turning it into a civil war is better or if they're hypocrites doing the same thing Edelgard is.]

And who decides who deserves to live or die? You?

[He just cannot stand the taking of lives, even if everybody argues how necessary it is.]

It depends. Whoever gave me this charge must agree with that tyrant back home, so I guess I'm not too surprised.

[For now, she places that parchment of paper in her breast pocket. She has an inkling that it won't disappear no matter what she does, so for now, she'll keep it safe. If anything, she would have to think of a defense for herself, and that alone would be a bit complicated.]

Oh no, I don't decide anything. But that's what happens when there's war, I guess. You don't really get a choice.

[Spoken with an all too casual tone. She's grown used to all of this by now, and she has to say. Being here is a nice reprieve from all of that, even though she worries about those back home having to deal with it.]

Either way, I'll have to come up with a defense eventually. All of us with this parchment paper will have to.

Warm welcome!

Do excuse me...

[Rin's (rightful) meltdown, for better or for worse, is interrupted. For there is a rather tall, blackrobed man striding toward her, what little can be seen of his features underneath his stark, white facemask taught with concern- his mouth a narrow, terse line.]

Forgive the presumption, yet I believe you are newly arrived? And you have found yourself accused via writ of something reprehensible?

[The new presence in her vicinity is quick to get her attention after her meltdown comes to an end, and she turns toward that general direction to see who wants her attention. About to look down at the figure -- since she tended to be taller than most -- but finding herself looking up instead. Rin blinking a few times in surprise, before the initial emotion is quickly replaced with interest.

That mask certainly has her attention, and she tilts her head to the side in curiosity. It's something that she's never seen before, but she instead flashes him with a friendly smile. There wasn't any reason to be unkind to those who were new here, just like herself. Rin priding herself on usually being the friendly one.]

Yep, and yep! I'm assuming that you're also new here, very tall stranger? And that your charges are utter bullshit?

[personal profile] lackingtalent 2023-02-04 10:47 am (UTC)(link)
Quite so.

[He won't use language even half as colourful as Rin- but the sentiment is identical.]

Truth be told, as much as I sympathize, it's somewhat reassuring to know that I'm not the only one. I feel multiple incidences of inaccuracy may prompt our hosts into reassessing their information.

[In Hythlodaeus' mind, as a once-bureaucrat accustomed to such paperwork, it stood to sense. There must be Some kind of office to issue the parchments, staffed with someone to petition, to appeal. One mistake could be addressed in due course. A series of them? ]

I intend to look for the place of which these documents have come from, and lodge an appeal. Would you be interested in joining me?

[Ah, yes. He had quite forgotten. The narrow line of his mouth reshapes itself into a faint smile.]

Do forgive me. I have not even told you my name. It is Hythlodaeus... and despite the circumstances, I must admit, I am glad to see a friendly face.

You think so? If they're willing to throw out false charges, then I'm not entirely sure... But who knows.

[It was hard for Rin to understand the whole process. That was her Dad's specialty, paper work and all. Although, this new stranger seems to understand that same process, and Rin keeps this in mind. The man would make a good ally in the long run for things that she didn't understand about this place.]

I would, actually. I'm not so good with paper work myself, but I am good at protecting people. ... And fighting. So if you run into any trouble, I can at least protect you.

[This was beyond Rin's intelligence to be completely fair, but she wanted to offer the one thing she was at least good at.]

Hytho-- what? You know, why don't I just call you 'Hyth' for short! You can call me Rin.

[The corner of her lips curve into a friendly smile, and she reaches outward to shake his hand. Ever the friendly one, despite the odd situation they both found themselves in.]

I think there's a village not far from here. We can go there, and see what we can find.

[personal profile] lackingtalent 2023-02-05 12:17 pm (UTC)(link)
It is a pleasure, Rin.

[Oh, he cannot help it, but he is charmed. In respect of Rin's demeanor- most crucially, her candidness strikes him as so very similar to someone deeply important to him. Someone from long ago, so very important.

So he takes the hand, nodding as he shakes it.
]

I'm glad I met you. I must confess, were I to be accosted, I imagine I'd fare rather badly. Combat certainly isn't my forte.

[To the subject of the village...]

Yes, I think I saw some buildings in the distance. Likely not anything close to a city, yet I think it will suit for information gathering.

[The hand is let go of, and he moves his gaze to the distance.]

Shall we?
